The 2024/25 season brought significant structural changes to the competition, replacing the traditional group stage with a new league phase.
All 36 clubs now compete in a single league, each playing eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home, four away. The top eight sides advance directly to the playoffs. Teams finishing 9th to 24th enter a playoff qualifier round for the remaining spots. Those finishing 25th or below are eliminated.
From the round of 16 onwards, the competition follows the traditional knockout format. That is, two-legged ties through to the final, which gets played at a predetermined neutral venue.
Teams qualify through domestic league performance across Europe. Champions from smaller leagues enter earlier qualifying rounds, while top finishers from the Big Five - the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 - receive direct entry to the league phase. The reigning Champions League holders also qualify automatically for the following season's competition.
The expanded format creates more fixtures, more varied encounters and more opportunities to get involved. With 36 clubs navigating a single league table, results elsewhere can directly affect a team's fate, adding another layer to how the competition unfolds.
The core markets available for Champions League fixtures mirror those you'll find across the Premier League and football more broadly, but the competition brings its own outright and tournament-specific options worth knowing about.
Back a home win, away win or draw across 90 minutes. The most straightforward way to bet on any Champions League fixture.

Predict whether both sides find the net. With attacking quality on show at each stage of the competition, BTTS markets stay relevant from the first whistle to the last.
Bet on whether the match goes over or under a set number of goals. Team playstyles and strategic approaches - particularly in cross-league matchups – can be particularly relevant here than in predictable domestic fixtures.
Combine two outcomes in a single bet: home win or draw, away win or draw, or home win or away win. A useful option when watching a match where the result feels less clear-cut.
Call the exact final score, but for longer odds. Champions League matches can produce unexpected scorelines, which is part of what makes this market a popular option.
We cover all the nuances of this market in our Correct Score Betting Explained article.
Back a certain player to score at any point, open the scoring or grab the last goal. With elite forwards on show at every stage, these markets are an option worth considering.
Combine multiple selections for enhanced odds or build a custom bet across different markets within the same fixture. The more legs you add, the bigger the potential return, but the more difficult it becomes to land.
Live odds that move with the game. React to what's happening on the pitch - not what might - at any point in the match.
Back a team to lift the trophy in May. Available before and throughout the competition, with odds shifting as the tournament takes shape.
Back teams to progress through specific knockout rounds. These markets start garnering attention as the tournament develops and the stakes are raised.
Predict which player finishes as the leading goalscorer across all stages. A long-term market that runs the full course of the competition.
Champions League football presents considerations that don't necessarily come into play in domestic football. Here's what to factor in.
In domestic football, you typically have a handle on how teams match up: their recent form, head-to-head records and tactical tendencies are all well documented. Champions League fixtures regularly pit clubs from different leagues against each other, sometimes for the very first time, creating uncertainty that's harder to resolve with straightforward analysis.
A high-pressing Bundesliga side meeting a defensively organised Serie A team can introduce matchup questions with no meaningful historical precedent. That unfamiliarity can surface opportunities less visible in the more predictable rhythms of domestic football.
Champions League fixtures can require trips from London to Madrid or Glasgow to Munich, occasionally further. Some clubs in the 2025/26 competition face journeys to Kazakhstan, crossing multiple time zones and climates in the process.
These extended travel demands can affect team performance in ways domestic fixtures simply don't replicate. Midweek European trips followed quickly by weekend league games can congest schedules and force rotations that reshape how a team lines up and performs.
League campaigns allow teams to absorb a few poor results across 38 (46 in the Championship, League 1 and League 2) games. Champions League knockout ties offer no such buffer, and outcomes can hinge on just a few key moments across 180 minutes.
That pressure can shape how teams approach matches, particularly away legs where sides facing a deficit must overturn it in unfamiliar surroundings. The tactical implications a situation like that can force are worth considering when assessing your options.
Teams juggling the Champions League with a domestic title race or cup run may prioritise differently depending on their situation.
A club secure in the middle of the domestic table might field a stronger lineup in Europe, whereas a side with one foot already out of the competition may look elsewhere.
Awareness of likely lineups and team priorities introduces a layer of nuance that raw squad quality comparisons don't capture.
Teams can struggle domestically while thriving in Europe. And vice versa. Setups that work well against familiar domestic opponents don't always translate across different European styles, and the reverse can be equally true. Champions League-specific form can be a more reliable indicator than a team's overall season record.
Getting your bets placed is straightforward with us. Here's how it works:
Log into your account and head to the football markets. You'll find Champions League fixtures under the A-Z Football tab in the International section.
Select your match and browse the available markets. Click any market to add it to your bet slip.
Set your stake. Your potential payout will update automatically based on the odds.
Review your selections - we offer bet recommendations based on your picks - then confirm. You'll receive immediate confirmation of your wager.
Worth knowing: if you add multiple selections to your bet slip, it will update to show the bet type and flag any active bet builder legs.
Champions League matches rarely follow a script, and our in-play markets move with them.
Live odds adjust in real time as the action unfolds, with match winner, next goal, total goals, correct score and a range of other markets updating across the full 90 minutes.
A team trailing going into a second leg may start more aggressively than the first, which can affect both the tempo and the goals markets. A side protecting a narrow advantage may set up more defensively, with implications that can be equally as significant. That’s why it’s good to know what’s already happened before placing a live bet.
Elite teams are able to shift the course of a game quickly. A goal against the run of play may temporarily move the trailing side's odds before the stronger team reasserts control, and those moments of transition can be where interesting live betting opportunities emerge.
The quality of squads in the later rounds also becomes a factor in the final stages of matches. Fresh legs from deeper benches can exploit tiring opponents, and the combination of fatigued defences, increasingly offensive tactics and higher-risk approaches means late goals are a consistent feature of top-level European football.
Champions League nights bring a level of drama and occasion that's hard to match. Keeping responsible betting habits in place means they stay that way.
Matchdays often feature multiple games running concurrently. Establish a budget before the first whistle and stick to it. The occasion shouldn't change the approach.
With several matches live at the same time, a losing bet on one game isn't a reason to reach for another. Treat each bet individually.
Upsets are part of what makes the Champions League compelling. Favourites get knocked out and underdogs make finals. Factor that unpredictability into your thinking, not just any selection you’re looking at making.
We offer spend limits, account time-outs and activity tracking to help you stay in control. Use them.
The Champions League is one of football’s great spectacles, with or without a bet on it. Keep that perspective and it stays that way.
